The word “Rudraksha” is derived from two Sanskrit words: “Rudra,” a name for Lord Shiva, and “Aksha,” which means “eye.” According to Hindu mythology, Rudraksha beads are believed to have originated from the tears of Lord Shiva.
The story of origin of Rudraksha on the middle earth, as described in Shri MadDeviBhagwat Purana (Reference 2), which Lord Shiva told to his son Kartikeya, is as follows.
In ancient times, demon named Tripur defeated the gods and killed many people. With the aim of getting rid of him, Brahmaji and Vishnuji came to me along with other gods. Now I kept my eyes open for 1 thousand divine years to accomplish the task. Tears came out of my own eyes and fell on the earth; wherever the drops of my tear fell, Rudraksha trees grew there.
